‘A Heart for Mason’ Benefit

The Benefit for Mason A. Black was held at Post 490 on Saturday, October 5, 2002 and it was a HUGE SUCCESS raising over $20,000 surpassing even Gerald Harris’ estimate.  The benefit was sponsored by S.A.L. Squadron 490 with support by American Legion Post 490 and the Ladies Auxiliary Unit 490.

Little Mason (see below) is Squadron 490’s fiftieth member.  He is 21 months old and requires a heart transplant in order to survive.  This has created a huge financial crisis for his family and the funds raised by the benefit will help them through this crisis and the months to come.  We ask that you pray for them and Mason and we will keep you informed of his status.

The benefit had fun for all.  There were two cooking teams led by John Evans of the Post and Mike Levulis of the Squadron.   Ronnie Cummings supplied the cooker for the Squadron and was great assistance.   Sallie Nouis and the Ladies manned the kitchen with support by the Ladies of the ‘A Heart for Mason’ Committee.  A rousing Live Auction was led by Bob Green and Tom Barbara.  Gerald Harris manned the liquid refreshments.  Stephanie Siegner made the biggest catch in the live auction by outbidding everyone for the autographed picture of George H. Bush which was donated to the benefit by the former President of the United States.  The silent auction was silent but profitable.  Mike Polyard, Squadron Commander, and his wife, Ronnie Sue, handled the 50/50.  It should be mentioned that the 50/50 money was won by Stephanie and she donated it to Mason.  We had two bands with both Andy Bateman and Ed Sparks of the Squadron providing guitar and vocal support.  Ed, who is 12 years old,  and his sister, Courtney who is 13, also held a drive for Mason at their school and raised donations for Mason.  A fire truck arrived in mid-afternoon and was a big excitement to the numerous children at the Benefit.

A big thanks goes out to the Ladies of the Committee – Peggy (Mason’s Grandmother), Melissa (Mason’s Aunt), and their friends, Valerie, Linda, and Dianne.

And thanks to all of you who attended the Benefit and contributed to Mason’s Fund.

                For God and Country,

                Bob Amick

                Adjutant - Squadron 490
